Helen Cooke, MyPlus CEO joins new Disability Commission

Windsor, UK - 4th June 2020 - MyPlus CEO and Founder Helen Cooke has been appointed a Commissioner for the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ)’s new Disability Commission. Chaired by Lord Shinkwin, the Disability Commission will focus on ensuring the government delivers on disability as part of its levelling up agenda.

Lord Shinkwin will be joined by eleven Commissioners made up of business leaders from EY, Clifford Chance and Deloitte, a former Minister for disabled people, Baroness Tanni GreyThompson DBE and various disability experts.

“The Disability Commission has been set up to secure a step change in the opportunities available to disabled people, especially in employment, to live their lives fully and as they want to. Its message is simple – ‘Levelling up: time to get it done’.” Lord Shinkwin.

In their 2019 General Election Manifesto, the Conservative Party outlined plans to publish a National Disability Strategy. It aims to look at “ways to improve the benefits system, opportunities and access for disabled people in terms of housing, education, transport and jobs” and include existing commitments to “increase SEND funding and support pupils, students and adults to get careers advice, internships, and transition into work” as well as reducing the disability employment gap.

The aim of the Disability Commission is to help the Government chart a robust, radical and pragmatic way forward. Drawing on the insights, expertise and lived experience of its members, it will develop practical recommendations to underpin a winning action plan that delivers for disabled people, businesses and the economy. Its message is simple – ‘Leveling up: time to get it done’.
