Build the confidence to do the right thing: from recruitment onwards

Any type of difference can cause us to be uncomfortable and this is never truer than with disability. For many of us, disability remains an uncomfortable subject and presents challenges around interactions and conversations.

When it comes to student recruitment it is this discomfort, in part, that has stopped us from making the progress that we would have liked to have done. It has prevented us from engaging with individuals, providing appropriate support during the recruitment process and sometimes even assessing individuals correctly and fairly. It’s now time to move on, to see past a persons’ disability, and start making real progress in this area.

This workshop presented by MyPlus Director Helen Cooke provided delegates with the opportunity to discuss their fears and concerns; to consider what is appropriate in terms of language and behaviours; to build their confidence to engage in conversations about providing support; and explore what is and is not appropriate to ask during interviews.

The workshop was delivered in an interactive style and provided delegates with plenty of opportunity to ask questions and challenge what they are learning. The format also enabled delegates to learn from others working in this challenging space.
